Wildfire Watcher Project

About the Project

The SteamRocket Wildfire Watcher project empowers youth to build and deploy wildfire sensors, fostering STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education while promoting environmental stewardship and community resilience.

Given that wildfire season in Southern California typically spans from May through October, our project is timely and crucial in mitigating the impact of wildfires on our community.

Through hands-on workshops and educational activities, participants learn sensor assembly, coding, and environmental monitoring skills, equipping them with the tools to detect wildfires early and minimize their impact on our community and environment.

Building Fire Sensors with uFire

Participants in the SteamRocket Wildfire Watcher project will have the unique opportunity to build their own wildfire sensors from scratch. Under the guidance of experienced mentors and instructors, they will learn about electronics, circuits, and sensor technology. Through step-by-step instructions and hands-on activities, participants will assemble the components, program the sensors, and test their functionality.

Once completed, these wildfire sensors will be deployed in strategic locations within local nature preserves, providing real-time data on environmental conditions and potential wildfire threats. By actively engaging youth in the sensor-building process, we not only promote STEAM education but also empower them to make a tangible difference in wildfire prevention efforts.

Our Goals

Engage Coachella Valley youth in STEAM education and hands-on learning opportunities.

Build a network of wildfire sensors in local nature preserves, providing early detection capabilities to minimize the impact of wildfires on our community and environment.

Foster environmental stewardship and community resilience among youth, empowering them to take proactive measures to protect our natural resources and habitats.
